The President of Kiribati, Anote Tong says they have taken into consideration Fiji’s offer to accommodate them if their islands are eventually submerged.
While addressing delegates from 79 different states at the ACP-EU joint parliamentary assembly, Anote Tong thanked the government and people of Fiji for their most compassionate and challenging offer to accommodate the people of Kiribati when the need would arise.
He says although the people of Kiribati are not in a position to move in masses yet, they have taken Fiji’s offer into consideration.
Tong also commended the effort put in by Fiji for rising to the moral challenge of lead the fight in Climate Change in the Pacific.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama had previously highlighted that Fiji is prepared to give Kiribati new homes here if their islands are eventually submerged.
Kiribati has also purchased a portion of land in Vanua Levu to ensure its long‑term food security.
