Forty-one newly admitted lawyers were reminded of their duty to uphold justice, act with integrity and maintain the highest ethical standards.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for the University of the South Pacific's Professional Diploma in Legal Practice graduates, Chief Justice Salesi Temo stressed the significance of their new role in the legal profession.
Justice Temo says they are now officers of the High Court and they have the power to seek justice for their clients and to challenge any obstacles within the legal system.
He says it's a special day for the students and their families for having reached this point in their lives where they are now formally lawyers.
Justice Temo says the hard work, discipline and challenges led them to this stage.
He also reminded them that while law school provided a strong theoretical foundation, the practical world of legal practice comes with its own complexities.
He further says that lawyers may think that what they have learned in Law School is enough.
He urges the new lawyers to learn from the experience of senior practitioners.
Justice Temo says it is not wrong for them to see a senior lawyer, talk to them and ask them questions.
He says that senior lawyers have a wealth of experience to share. Justice Temo also highlighted the importance of maintaining ethical standards throughout their careers, reminding them to never steal from clients.
He says some lawyers in the past have allegedly stolen money.
He adds that lawyers must work hard and earn their own money.
