A year 13 student from Tauveqaveqa, Joshika Lal who has come through a lot of difficult times, is the dux of Ba Sangam College for this year.

Lal says she had worked hard to gain the highest mark in the Year 13 annual exam.

She says her father is a Social Welfare benefit recipient and she thinks this is the best gift for her father for this year’s Christmas.

Joshika Lal says she wants to pursue her studies at the University of the South Pacific to be a teacher.

Meanwhile Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy says the days where a mother used to sell her jewellery in order to give her child a better education are gone.

Speaking at the Annual Prize Giving Ceremony, Dr Reddy reminded the students and parents that they no longer have to worry about their children’s education since everything has been taken care of.

Dr Reddy assured them that the free education, free bus fare scheme and Tertiary Education Loan Scheme will continue next year.

He says they have come across situations in the past where parents did not send their children to school because they could not even afford to get them their lunch.

He says the Ministry will ensure that it does not happen in future.
