Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s halfback and two-time Olympics gold medallist Jerry Tuwai will be out to prove himself in this weekend’s HSBC Madrid 7s.
Tuwai proved doubters wrong and fought his way back into the squad for the final tournament before the Olympic Games.
Previous Fiji 7s coach Ben Gollings had left Tuwai out of his squads insisting the playmaker, who has been undertaking various coaching roles, did not have the fitness levels required to earn a recall.
The 35-year-old has not featured for Fiji since the HSBC London 7s in May 2023 but now has a chance to win a place in the team that will try and make it a hat-trick of Olympic gold medal triumph in Paris this summer.
Tuwai responded to the challenge by coach Osea Kolinisau to prove he could regain the fitness needed to be part of the squad attempting to lift the HSBC title in the final of the new format for the competition.
The Madrid 7s will be held from tomorrow night to Monday morning.
The Fiji Men will take on NZ at 12.14am Saturday, they will then play Ireland at 11.06pm Saturday before taking on South Africa at 1.49am Sunday.
The Men’s cup semi finals will kick off at 10.21pm Sunday and the cup final will be at 6.26am Monday.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s will take on France at 11.28pm tomorrow, they will then play Australia at 10.22pm Saturday before playing Ireland at 1.05am Sunday.
The Women’s Cup semi finals will kick off at 9.33pm Sunday and the cup final will be at 5.49am Monday.
