The Japanese Government since 1990 has been providing assistance to grassroots communities in Fiji, worth US$25 million.
This was highlighted by the Japanese Ambassador to Fiji Masahiro Omura while opening the new footbridge at Visama Village in Tailevu, yesterday.
Omura says villagers of Visama for the past several years have been using coconut trunks as a bridge.
He says this was a risk to students, elderly persons, pregnant women and those needing urgent medical attention.
The Ambassador stated that they are delighted that the bridge will now provide safety and security to Visama villages and nearby communities.
Omura says the project is also in Iine with Fiji’s National Development Plan underlying the principle in promoting "inclusive socio‑economic development".
The Ambassador encouraged the villages of Visama to make full use of this new opportunity and at the same time take care of their bridge so that it can serve them in many years to come.
The Government of Japan through the Japans Grant Assistance for Human Security Projects provided funding of $175,870 for the construction of the new footbridge.
