“It hurt me to hear stories of women and girls who are using old socks, newspapers, towels and rags as sanitary pads.”
These were the words of 14-year-old Faith Raduva who says she and her sister AnneMary started a charity drive to give out dignity kits to women and girls.
Raduva says she was touched by the large number of women and girls that she had spoken to that do not have access to proper sanitary pads.
Speaking to fijivillage, Raduva says after hearing of the sad stories that girls of her age have to use as pads, she was inspired to help them.
She says these girls have shared with her that sanitary pads are not part of their shopping list and it hurts her to think of them.
Raduva says they started this charity drive after Tropical Cyclone Yasa and when they saw that also of people who were affected only received food and other essential items, but not sanitary pads.
She says now they have distributed more than 4,000 kits to those families who are facing difficulties in providing pads for women and girls in some areas in Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Kadavu and Vatulele.
Raduva says they have also given some dignity kits to Allen Lockington of Lautoka who then distributes it to affected families.
She says she plans to start giving out cloth pads in the future and she and her sister areworking on this.
