Former Parliamentarian, Irene Jai Narayan will be laid to rest today.
In a funeral service at the Jai Narayan College hall in Suva this morning, former Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka said that Narayan fought tirelessly for the rights of Indo-Fijians in the past.
Fiji Labour Party Leader, Mahendra Chaudhry highlighted that Narayan was not only the first woman in Fiji’s politics but also fought against white collar crimes in the then government.
Also present at the funeral service were President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau along with the Education Minister Filipe Bole.
79 year old Narayan was a member of the National Federation Party and later joined the Alliance Party.
She served in the legislative council from 1966 to 1987, was a Minister for Indian Affairs and a Senator for two years.
