The Fiji Corrections Service is investigating to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of a 60-year-old inmate at the Naboro Minimum Corrections Centre.
This comes amidst allegations that the Officer in Charge did not allow the inmate to be taken to the hospital for chest pains.
A post on facebook claims the inmate passed away on Saturday morning in his cell.
While responding to questions by fijivillage News, the Fiji Corrections Service says they are saddened and confirm that the inmate passed away at the CWM Hospital on Saturday.
They say the deceased inmate had hypertension and an enlarged heart.
The Corrections Service says they are obligated first and foremost to inform the family when the death of an inmate occurs which has been done just hours after the incident.
They say a Board of Inquiry has been deployed to investigate all circumstances surrounding the case.
