The three major reasons behind the increase in insurance premium payments for hybrid vehicles is that the parts for these vehicles are expensive, the vehicles are prone to high damages and inexperienced drivers.

Insurance Council of Fiji Chairperson Sarah‑Jane Wild says Hybrid vehicles do not require more maintenance but it takes an accident and the quarter of the car needs to be repaired.

Wild says acquiring parts for hybrid vehicles is expensive.

Insurance Council of Fiji member Lolesh Sharma says previously Prius cars used to come Duty-Free while the spare parts for these vehicles had duty imposed on them.

Wild adds that the lower valued vehicles are more accessible to people.

She says with the purchase of new vehicles, the people who did not have the driving experience have vehicles which are leading to a lot of accidents.
