Inaction of Police leads to repeated brawls at Sawani Shopping Centre

The inaction of police has resulted in repeated brawls occurring every weekend at the Sawani Shopping Centre, as people wait for transport back to their village in Naitasiri.

A concerned villager told fijivillage News that this is a common occurrence and many people cannot report the incidents to the police because they fear for their safety.

He says that heavy alcohol consumption among youths has led to brawls inside passenger carriers during trips, with women and children heard screaming as the altercations continue.

He adds that police officers are unable to control these incidents because they know they are outnumbered, and the absence of traffic officers on the road to Naitasiri has led to overcrowded transport for the public.

The villager also claims that while he was on his way to report the matter to the Sawani Police Station, police officers were allegedly drinking grog with drivers.

In response to questions sent to the police, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, ACP Livai Driu encouraged victims of any crime to report incidents so that investigations can be conducted.

ACP Driu also urges Fijians to report any concerns regarding police service delivery and conduct at the divisional headquarters or through the Divisional Police Command Centers.

He says sharing of information is crucial in such incidents, as police need details about the vehicle involved, the time, and the location of the incidents.

Police say that the contact numbers for these centres are posted and have been advertised, enabling investigations to proceed.
