Improper waste disposal has become a major problem within Nasinu and we are working closely with agencies such as the Ministry of Health and the Department of Environment for enforcement in these areas.
This has been highlighted by the Nasinu Town Council when asked by fijivillage News about the increased irresponsible dumping of rubbish in the Nasinu area.
The council says they continue to issue Litter Removal Notices to those dumping waste outside the waste collection schedule.
The litter fines range from $40 being spot fine for littering and up to $10,000 for abandoning dangerous litter including waste that poses harm/ injury to the public such as construction waste, broken glass, razor blades, syringes, hazardous household products, dead animals, glass bottles and drums.
In April this year, the enforcement team issued 59 removal notices and 2 penalty spot fines of $40 each.
The council says when residents comply with the removal notices, the matter does not go further for penalty or legal action and areas where removal notices are issued are closely monitored.
They are also requesting residents to help in identifying and providing evidence of people who litter illegally within the Nasinu vicinity.
The council is also reaching out to its communities through community engagement through awareness programs prioritizing hotspot areas to educate residents on correct waste disposal methods, separation of waste into kitchen waste, white goods and green waste, penalties on littering, implementation of waste collection schedules and collaboration with residents and other stakeholders.
