History will be made as the I Vola Sigavou or Fiji's Drua sponsored by the University of Fiji will take part in the Musket Cove Regatta against 50 yachts from around the world.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Fiji, Professor Shaista Shameem says sponsoring the I Vola Sigavou as the University’s entry in the regatta was aimed to show the public that the traditional Fijian sailing vessel can compete in a tough race with the most modern of ocean-going craft.
Shameem says the I Vola Sigavou or Fiji's Drua will be flying the University of Fiji flag during the race.
I Vola Sigavou Captain, Setareki Ledua who is one of the staff of the Center for iTaukei Studies at the University, says it was always his dream to sail the Drua in a sailing competition.
Ledua says the Drua will sail against yachts from around the world and it is an opportunity to show how they can connect with the community.
Ledua is thankful to the University of Fiji for sponsoring his team to be a part of the competition.
The Fijian Drua took part in the race after successfully sailing to the villages of Viseisei, Lauwaki and Namoli through the University climate change mitigation research last week.
The regatta competition will be finishing tomorrow.
