Jordie Barrett failed in two chances to snatch a last-gasp win against the Brumbies in Canberra in last night as the Hurricanes went down 12-10.
With the loss the Hurricanes’ Super Rugby trans-Tasman campaign has been left in tatters as twice in the last two minutes of the game Barrett missed what would have been match-winning penalties.
The defeat means the only chance the Hurricanes have of making the Super Rugby trans-Tasman final is if they defeat the Reds next weekend and two of the Highlanders, Blues and Crusaders lose their games.
Chances of that happening seem remote and the reality is that the Hurricanes’ Super Rugby has come to a disappointing end.
The Hurricanes were able to rack up plenty of tries against the Waratahs, Rebels and Force in their first three games of this short season, but their attack failed to get out of second gear on a chilly night in Australia’s capital city.
Their forwards failed to dominate and constant mistakes meant they weren’t able to build momentum.
In another match yesterday, Jona Nareki got a double as the Highlanders thrashed the struggling Waratahs 59-23 to sit in second place - a point behind the Blues and ahead of the Crusaders on points difference.
