Social Empowerment and Education Executive Director Chantelle Khan has highlighted a worrying concern with the increased police brutality cases that have been reported.
As hundreds of people took part in the march from Suva Flea Market to Sukuna Park today to commemorate World Human Rights Day, Khan paid tribute to recently passed Ilaisa Batai who was an avid advocate within the spaces he worked in.
Khani says unfortunately, Batai passed away without receiving justice for the alleged police brutality he faced.
She says they are marching today to make a statement that they all believes human rights must be protected.
The march was organized by NGO Coalition on Human Rights which began at 10am and it was the culmination of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, from November 25th to December 10th.
Chairperson of the NGO Coalition on Human Rights, Nalini Singh says this day is a reminder to all of us that we have human rights that are guaranteed by our constitution.
Singh says we still see violations against human rights and often it is the duty bearers who are involved in this and we must hold them accountable for their actions.
Executive Director of femLINKpacific, Susan Grey remembered the women and girls whose voices are not amplified and those who are suffering in silence as we fight against COVID-19.
Grey is also calling out on leaders to think about those people who are suffering.
