A 48-year-old Hindu priest from Nausori who was convicted for a count of dangerous driving causing death has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.
Sailesh Shandil drove his vehicle in a dangerous manner and hit a seven-year-old child who was waiting near the Wainibokasi Road.
The incident happened at around 2pm on 7th October, 2016.
While sentencing him, Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne stated that Shandil drove at high speed in a densely populated area in Nausori and there are a number of schools in the area.
He says a custodial sentence is warranted to denounce Shandil’s driving as well as deter others from behaving in this manner in the future.
Shandil will be able to apply for parole after serving one year in prison.
