In a collective effort to enhance safety and accessibility, Hilton Special School’s 13 classes organized a walk-a-thon fundraiser with the goal of raising $13,000 to reconstruct a walkway that has been in use for the past 60 years but now poses safety risks.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Head of School Ashwini Sen Mudliar says the new walkway would provide a secure and safe path for students, ensuring their well-being as they navigate the campus.
She says this goal was established with the understanding that there would be no pressure placed on parents to contribute, making participation voluntary and enjoyable for everyone.
She adds that this approach not only fostered creativity and teamwork among students and teachers but also allowed families to contribute at a level they were comfortable with.
Mudliar acknowledged that the school’s biggest challenge in maintaining and upgrading facilities is securing adequate funding. However, she expressed gratitude for the generosity of the school community and the support of sponsors like Goodman Fielder and Pleass Beverages, who provided snacks and water for participants during the walk-a-thon.
