High Court Judge Justice, Deepthi Amaratunga has granted the orders to register a warrant filed by the DPP from the United States to seize the Russian superyacht, Amadea however, the lawyer representing the owner of the superyacht has indicated to apply for a stay on the ruling.
The DPP, Christopher Pryde filed an ex parte originating summons under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act in the High Court.
Representing the owners of Amadea, Millemarim Investment Limited, Feizel Haniff has requested the court to order a stay until they have filed an appeal against the ruling.
He says there are strong indications that the US Coast Guard, FBI and other American authorities are in the country to take away the yacht.
Haniff adds they seek protection from court for the yacht to remain as it is and consider the ruling of the court.
Justice Amaratunga asked the DPP lawyer, Jayneeta Prasad if there is any truth to what Haniff is saying.
Prasad says she does not know anything however, the yacht is not going anywhere today and has assured Haniff that his rights will be protected and he will be allowed to file for the stay.
Justice Amaratunga who delivered an oral ruling says he will register the written ruling tomorrow, allowing time to Haniff to file an application on the stay on the ruling.
