High Court Judge, Justice Vinsent Perera will deliver his ruling on 22nd June in FICAC’s appeal against Former Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy’s Magistrates Court judgement.
Reddy's lawyer, Devanesh Sharma told the court that a re‑trial should not be ordered considering what Reddy went through when he was initially charged.
Sharma said that Reddy's career took a massive dent when the allegations were made, he had also faced personal trauma and had incurred financial loss.
He also said that Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili's judgment is factually correct.
Sharma has sought that the appeal be dismissed with costs.
FICAC lawyer, Rashmi Aslam submitted that the problem is that the Chief Magistrate in his final judgement said that the prosecution had failed to provide any evidence whereas in the ruling for the no case to answer he stated that there was a case to answer.
Aslam said that Chief Magistrate was inconsistent with the ruling in the no case to answer and the judgement.
Reddy was found not guilty of a count each of bribery and undue influence by Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili.
