Former Fiji Secondary Schools sprint sensation and Queensland Reds winger Heleina Young has signed up with the Fiji Rugby Union and formally joined the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s side for the remainder of the 2023-2024 HSBC Women’s 7s series.
Young’s inclusion will surely add depth to the speed out wide for the Fijiana 7s as they have former secondary school sprint queen Younis Bese and Reapi Uluinasau already threatening the opposition with their pace.
After signing the contract, Young says she was glad she decided to sign with Fiji Rugby.
She says not everyone gets the opportunity to represent Fiji at the Olympics and when she got the call, she reached out and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Young says this is a learning curve for her as she links up with some of the best players in the game and adds she still has a long way to go and she wants to contribute whatever she can towards the team.
According to Fiji Rugby Union, Young’s inclusion as well will strengthen the team’s efforts to secure a medal in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The 23-year-old also had a sterling performance for the Reds Women’s team at this year’s Super W Championship and is likely to bring that consistency into the Fijiana 7s.
The next leg of the HSBC SVNS Series will be held in Perth from the 26th to the 28th of January 2024.
