Heavy rain and gales brought a damp and miserable start to 2018 for some Kiwis.

The summer storm swamped parts of the North Island, with heavy rain, strong winds, flooding and slips recorded across New Zealand.

Auckland has had more rain in the past 24 hours than what it had in all of November and December combined.

More than 24 hours of heavy rain has flooded Auckland's Northern Motorway and led to evacuations on the Coromandel Peninsula ‑ and there is still more to come.

Tidal surges are possible from Northland to Bay of Plenty, with the public urged to avoid beaches.
