The Ministry of Health has welcomed the bold move taken by the Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner, Iferemi Vasu to impose a Kava ban at the Naboro Prison Compound.
National Adviser for Wellness and Non‑communicable diseases, Dr Isimeli Tukana said the move taken by the commissioner is positive.
Tukana said this will have a lot of positive health outcomes for the officers and their families.
He said Kava drinking, greatly contributes to a person getting Non‑communicable diseases.
He said the Ministry of Health is concerned with this issue and it will continuously address it.
The Kava ban at the Naboro Prison Compound has been in force now for two months and according to the Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner, Iferemi Vasu its main purpose is to ensure that they have active and healthy officers.
He said the ban will only be lifted when the Head Supervisor at the Naboro Prison Compound is satisfied with the officers’ performance.
There was also a kava ban in the Nasinu Prison compound for two months and it was removed 2 weeks ago.
