Today is Facebook's 16th birthday!
Founder Mark Zuckerberg says when he started building the website he never imagined it would grow to connect billions of people.
On his official Facebook page, Zuckerberg wrote that he thought something like this needed to get built for the world, but he figured someone else would do it.
He says but they believed more deeply in the power of connecting people, so they kept pushing ahead when others doubted.
Zuckerberg says he has learned a lot since 2004 adding the last few years, in particular, have been very humbling.
He further wrote one of the most important lessons he has learned is too always stand up for your principles, even when they're unpopular or out of fashion.
He says they believe progress happens when you give people a voice and bring people together.
He adds that's what they stand for.
Zuckerberg adds they know there will also be issues when you give more people a voice and new ways to connect, and they will keep working to address them.
The Facebook founder adds they believe in empowering people, because at the end of the day, they believe in people.
He says these basic ideas have guided them for the last 16 years and they will continue to guide them for a long time to come.
