Steve Hansen has tried to shepherd fans to support new All Black coach Ian Foster, saying they should "get in behind" him.

Foster was appointed by New Zealand Rugby this week, to a mixed reception as it appeared Crusaders coach Scott Robertson was the fan favourite.

Hansen told Newstalk ZB that Foster needs to be given a chance.

Hansen says it is time to sit back and let Foster take over and enjoy watching without all the pressure that comes with being the coach.

He says they had two outstanding candidates and Scott Robertson is a very good coach in his own right and could well have done a very good too.

The former All Blacks Coach says Foster is also a very good coach in his own right, and probably a coach at the moment who a lot of people aren't giving the respect he probably deserves, because he is a very good coach.
