Questions are being raised on how the newly renovated track surface at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva is peeling in certain areas one month after it was opened by Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka.
The track is peeling near the starting block area for the 100 metres and the schools athletics zone officials were told to start the 100 metres from the 10 metre mark and to finish at the 110 metre mark. Based on this, a tape was pasted at the 10 and 110 metre marks.
However the 100 metres events for the Coca Cola Games will start from the usual starting place this week as officials will have to use the photo finish.
When asked by fijivillage News, the Fiji Sports Council said in an earlier response that in collaboration with contractor, Sphynx Solution, it is pleased to announce a solution to the issue of the peeling track surface at the stadium.
When asked on how the track is peeling near the starting point, how much was paid to the contractor and what will be done, Fiji Sports Council's Executive Chairman, Gilbert Vakalalabure expressed the commitment to resolving the peeling track issue swiftly and ensuring optimal conditions for athletes and sports enthusiasts.
He says they have been proactive in addressing the peeled tracks at HFC Bank Stadium, and with the implementation of the Sphynx Solution, they are confident in providing a durable and sustainable track surface.
Vakalalabure says the cause of the peeling is still under investigation, but one possible factor is the drastic weather changes experienced in the region.
He says with warranty provisions in place, the Fiji Sports Council and Sphynx Solution are working together to address this issue effectively.
Vakalalabure says the innovative solution undertaking a durable and sustainable track surface, ensuring optimal conditions for athletes and sports enthusiasts.
When approached for comments, Sphynx Solution which is owned by former Fiji residents now living in Australia have opted not to make comments at this stage.
