Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says they have not made any deliberate attempt to find out where Aman Ravindra Singh is at this point in time but they need to look at their options as he could be in countries that Fiji does not have extradition agreements with.
Singh has been sentenced to 10 months imprisonment for contempt of court as he did not comply with the orders of the court that were given in relation to a defamation case that Voreqe Bainimarama and Sayed-Khaiyum had filed against Singh.
Sayed-Khaiyum says they have not made a decision and need to look at various other factors including on what basis he has left Fiji.
He says the last he was told was that Singh is in Australia and they have been told that he is not in New Zealand.
He says there have been Facebook posts saying this is a slap on the Government’s face but it is completely obtuse to say so as the applicants were two individuals, Voreqe Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
He further says a Departure Prohibition Order is not required for committal proceedings and it is not a criminal matter.
Sayed-Khaiyum says you do not know what the ruling may be and by asking for a Departure Prohibition Order, you are trying to preempt what the court will do and say he will be sent to prison.
The Attorney General further says Singh’s conduct demonstrates a complete lack of respect for the rule of law.
He says here we have an officer of the court physically absconding and abdicating his responsibilities as an officer of the court.
Sayed-Khaiyum adds he has shown deliberate malice, disrespect, and some will say cowardly behaviour.
fijivillage has made attempts to reach out to Singh for his response. He is yet to respond.
