The people of Vanua Levu can now expect better road conditions as the government and the People's Republic of China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve access to schools, health facilities, businesses, and markets in Vanua Levu.
Chinese Ambassador Zhou Jian says the projects will begin after a feasibility study is done this month.
He says this will include renovation and extension of roads up to 82 kilometres and construction of 22 bridges, which will connect 61 villages.
Jian says the roads will cover access for 15 primary or secondary schools and three higher education institutions.
The Ambassador also stated that once the project is completed it will push Fiji towards greater economic and social development.
He says that over the years, China has donated vehicles, agricultural machinery, and office equipment, helped to build infrastructure like hospitals, hydro-power stations, roads, stadiums and bridges, as well as implemented aid projects like rural power grid renovation, which greatly benefited the local people.
Jian also stated that China will continue to support Fiji in such areas.
