The government ship ‘MLC Veivueti’ is going around the country to remote islands on a regular basis to provide health care services to the people of Fiji
Minister for Health, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says Health Ministry officials on the ship provide medicine with cardiac echo services, minor operations and screening for major surgical services.
Waqainabete says that Fiji’s health care system is based on the primary health care model which is aimed at delivering basic health facilities including universal health care to the people of Fiji.
The Minister for Health highlighted that the ministry has extended its opening and closing hours in health centres around the country to deliver health care services to the people.
Dr Waqainabete says Fiji has 247 health care facilities, three divisional hospitals, two specialised hospitals, 17 sub divisional hospitals in the rural areas which will become 18 with the opening of the Navosa sub division hospital next year and 35 health centres and 100 nursing stations. As an initiative, the health officials from the Ministry of Health do house to house visits every week to have a better communication with community health outreach which makes divisional and sub- divisional hospitals interact better with the people.
