The Government of Japan has provided assistance worth $449,542 to Nasinu Town Council for the procurement of two 9 tonne garbage compactor trucks through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
The two new 9 tonne garbage compactor trucks are expected to provide greater efficiency as more garbage can be carried on fewer trips to the Naboro Landfill
Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Premila Kumar says the Fijian Government recognizes the need to create a cleaner environment and waste free public spaces.
She says that every community wants an environment free of rubbish.
The Japanese Ambassador to Fiji Masahiro Omura who handed over the trucks says that waste management is not only about sanitation, hygiene and disease control, it is also for preserving and protecting our environment.
Nasinu Town Council serves the largest township in Fiji with an estimated total population of 130,000 people and as a result the Council is facing a lot of difficulties in accommodating the waste disposal demand.
