The government is working with Energy Fiji Limited and donor partners to achieve 100% renewable energy generation by 2030.
Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama highlighted this at a High-Level Talanoa with the young pacific climate warriors during COP25 in Madrid last night.
Bainimarama says on the ground, they are pouring resources into projects to implement plans such as using solar mini-grids to bring electricity to villages on outer islands
He says they all know that for Fiji, and any Pacific Island country, adapting to climate change is a much more urgent priority than reducing our negligible levels of emissions.
Bainimarama says indeed, effective adaptation is inseparable from sustainable economic development.
He says they are investing in research to identify climate-resilient seeds and teach climate-resilient farming practices through rehabilitating our mangroves and coral reefs, working to restore degraded forests and stabilize riverbanks.
Bainimarama says they are committed to reaching the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree target by achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Bainimarama adds progress isn’t only about meeting global commitments as it is, quite simply, about making it better to be a Fijian.
