A Gold Coast mother killed two of her vulnerable adult children for financial gain, before trying to claim more than AUD$100,000 in death benefits.
Police allege that 51-year-old Maree Mavis Crabtree, allegedly forced prescription medication on her 18‑year‑old daughter and 26‑year‑old son, killing them in what initially appeared to be suicides.
Crabtree faced the Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with the murders, plus the years‑long torture of a 25‑year‑old woman, who remains alive but under the care of the adult guardian.
She also stands accused of successfully securing a fraudulent insurance payout of more than half a million dollars, and trying to defraud hundreds of thousands more.
Maree Crabtree was remanded in custody to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court again on February 12.
