Glue sniffing is also a problem amongst students in Taveuni.
Head of the Fiji Police Drug Unit Training Inspector Anare Masitabua said this is an outcome of an interview done with students on the island.
Masitabua said that during the Public Consultation on the Volatile Substances Draft in the North, diverse submissions were received by individuals, organisations and even the paramount chief of Cakaudrove.
One of the main submissions received in the North was for the provision in the draft for the fine and prison sentence of those selling volatile substances to minors to be increased.
Another issue raised was for parents to be more responsible when buying volatile substances for household or cosmetic use such as nail polish removers or air fresheners, to reduce the harm on their children.
Meanwhile, the Public Consultation on the Draft Volatile Substance Abuse Decree will be held at Devos on the Park in Suva this Friday.
