Vunimono High School student Nishika Sanya Prasad is grateful to the International Telecommunications Union and the Education Ministry for providing an ICT training program at their school, as she looks forward to pursuing her career in this field.
While speaking at the Girls In ICT Day Pacific 2023 at the Holiday Inn, Prasad said that by participating in this program, she has been able to get a better understanding of ICT, and through the activities and workshop, she has been able to develop her practical skills.
She says this includes coding skills, problem-solving abilities and critical thinking.
She adds online safety, emerging technology, digital networks and infrastructure, leadership and digital and inclusion programs and other related ICT skills, which are valuable skills in this digital era.
The Vunimono student says she has become aware of the career paths available in the ICT industry, and this exposure has inspired her to pursue her career in this field, especially something in cybersecurity.
Prasad says this program has boosted her self-confidence as she was able to express ideas and contribute to the discussions.
She further says this program has provided a lot of opportunities for her and her schoolmates to connect with industry professionals and experts who have been really supportive and who have always encouraged them to participate in this industry.
Prasad adds that by participating in this program, young females around the Pacific will be able to gain confidence and also believe in their abilities that they can excel in the area of ICT.
She also added that they are inspired by success stories of women who have excelled in this field since each of them has helped break down gender stereotypes and encouraged them to pursue passion without limitations.
She also highlighted that this has also contributed towards creating a more diverse and inclusive industry that supports and values the participation of women.
While speaking at the event, Minster for Housing and Acting Minister for Communications Maciu Nalumisa says the journey of empowering our young women in STEM and IT has been truly remarkable. This initiative was launched in April, coinciding with the International Telecommunications Union's (ITU) “Girls in ICT Day”.
He says the Girls in ICT initiative is designed to inspire and equip young girls aged 12 years to 24 years with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in the digital world.
Nalumisa says it is a movement that promotes inclusivity and diversity in the ever-evolving landscape of technology.
He adds through a collaborative effort with the ITU and the United Nations Office for Project Services, they successfully organised a series of transformative sessions at Vunimono High School and their partnership with the Ministry of Education has provided a nurturing environment for the growth and development of our young talents.
The Minster says the invaluable experiences shared by those who have paved their paths in the STEM field have served as beacons of hope for those following in their footsteps.
Nalumisa says looking ahead, our aspirations for the Girls in ICT initiative are significant and they envision a future where industry engagement becomes the cornerstone of our efforts, where pathways to STEM careers are not just a dream but a tangible reality.
He also highlighted that they are determined to reach even the most remote corners of our nation, including those with limited internet connectivity and individuals with disabilities.
