Chiefs head coach Warren Gatland is happy with the new initiatives that will be used throughout the Super Rugby Aotearoa, which kicks off next week.

The new innovations include golden point and the ability to replace players following a red card. Existing laws at the breakdown will be applied more strictly to create faster attacking ball and a fairer contest.

Gatland said the golden point initiative will add a whole lot of excitement.

He has also welcomed the return of former All Blacks rugby stars such as Daniel Carter.

He says this will create some interest in the competition just as when Aaron Cruden announced that he will participate for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs will open their Super Rugby Aotearoa competition against the Highlanders at 5.05pm next Saturday while the Blues will take on the Hurricanes next Sunday at 3.05pm next Sunday.
