Former Wellington Hurricanes Assistant Coach Chris Gibbes has been appointed as the new Swire Shipping Fijian Drua forwards coach.
Gibbes takes over from Greg Fleming, who has taken up the Defensive Coach duties at the Drua.
In a statement, the Fijian Drua says Gibbes brings a wealth of international coaching and playing experience to his new role at the club.
One of his major achievements was coaching the Maori All Blacks which secured a memorable 32-17 victory over Ireland in 2018.
He was also a forwards coach for Japan at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
While commenting on his appointment, Gibbes says having the opportunity to join the Drua is incredibly exciting and he is determined to add value to the strong foundation that has been built so far.
He says the Drua have a very exciting playing roster, a quality backroom staff and a highly motivated coaching team that he is looking forward to being a part of.
He adds the connection to Fiji is important to him and his family as his grandmother is from Rotuma and his Father was born in Suva, so he is extremely grateful for this opportunity and thrilled to grow this connection.
Fijian Drua CEO Mark Evans says Gibbes has a tremendous record in New Zealand as well as other rugby markets and is the perfect mentor for the Fijian Drua’s forwards as the club pushes to make an even bigger impact in Super Rugby Pacific.
Evans says Gibbes’ focus on instilling dominance in the pack complements the club’s incoming Head Coach Glen Jackson’s plans well for the upcoming season.
He adds Gibbes will be yet another coach at the Drua with previous Head Coach experience, which will be invaluable for the young playing group.
