An upgraded Flood Forecasting and Warning system has finally been installed in the Rewa River which will provide adequate warning to people living around the river to fully prepare themselves in times of natural disasters.
The system was installed by SOPAC through its Pacific Hydrological Cycle observing project which will measure the catchment rainfalls, river levels and river flows, allowing for more exact flood warning forecasting based on prior information.
Project Coordinator, Lloyd Smith said flooding is an ongoing danger in Fiji with close to $20million in direct damages every year to infrastructure, agriculture and homes.
He said the warning system will reduce risk and potential damages.
The project has been funded by the European Union Water facility for nearly half a million dollars.
Smith said the system installed is one of the best in the world.
