Blumhouse and Universal’s latest horror film, Five Nights at Freddy’s over the weekend shattered box office expectations, earning $78 million domestically and $130 million globally over Halloweekend making it one of the top-grossing horror films of the year.
Adapted from the video game of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy’s was directed by Emma Tammi and stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, a troubled nighttime security guard at a family entertainment centre called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
With just a $20 million budget, grossing $130 million globally would have been spectacular for the entire run of Five Nights at Freddy’s, let alone its first weekend in theatres.
After just three days of release, Five Nights at Freddy’s has surpassed the entire global box office of 2022’s Halloween Ends, which earned $104 million worldwide, and will soon surpass 2021’s Halloween Kills, which earned $133 million worldwide.
Five Nights at Freddy’s has been in development at Blumhouse, founded by horror guru Jason Blum, since 2015.
