Filariasis tablets will be distributed to households from later this month.

Over 2,000 volunteers called the ‘Filariasis Free Officials’ will be distributing the tablets in the Central, Eastern and Northern Divisions from the 26th of this month.

This is part of the National Filariasis Unit through the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization and other relevant stakeholders efforts to control and prevent filariasis occurrences in the country and aims to eliminate filariasis by 2018.

National Advisor Communicable Disease Dr Mike Kama said that one in ten persons in our community is still infected with filariasis in high risk localities.

This strategy is expected to promote acceptance of the tablets and encourage the public to swallow these tablets in the presence of Filariasis Free Officials.
