There is an increase in demand of pineapples in the country and Fiji already has an established protocol to export pineapple, however, due to low level of production, Fiji is only able to meet the local market demand.
This was highlighted by Commissioner Northern, Jovesa Vocea while speaking at the opening of the workshop at Dreketi Irrigation Training Centre says that Pineapple Production Training Workshop.
He adds that pineapple is the only agricultural crop that can grow on waste land that is the land not utilized by other crops.
Vocea says that after the training participants will go back to their various divisions and assist the farmers interested in pineapple farming to better utilize their land.
Twenty‑two agriculture Extension Officers from the Central, Western, Eastern and Northern Division have completed a workshop to improve husbandry practices in pineapple cropping.
The training organized by the Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture looks at the use of techniques to increase pineapple production to support the export of pineapple from Fiji to New Zealand.
The extension officers after undergoing training will also train and transfer the technology to the farmers in their localities.
