Excitement and anticipation is building among Fiji’s Muslim community as they prepare to welcome the sacred month of Ramadan, a time of deep reflection, fasting and togetherness.
Speaking to fijivillage News, the Chairperson of the Board of Islamic Affairs, Shaizad Ali from Lautoka says families are gathering, mosques are preparing for special prayers and hearts are filled with hope as everyone waits for confirmation of the new moon’s sighting tonight.
He says it is by the grace of Allah that they have reached the month of Shaban and now they stand at the doorstep of Ramadan.
He says this is a month of mercy and spiritual renewal and it officially begins when the new moon is sighted.
Ali says as soon as the moon is visible, Ramadan will commence from Maghrib (sunset), as in Islam, the night precedes the day.
He says tonight, they look toward the sky with hopeful hearts, waiting for that first glimpse of the crescent.
Ali says if it is sighted, they will come together in prayer and gratitude, knowing that a month of blessings, patience and kindness has begun.
He further adds from tomorrow morning, before Fajr, they will begin their fasts.
He says the fast starts at Subh-e-Sadiq (true dawn) and throughout the day, they refrain from eating and drinking until sunset.
Ali says it is a test of patience, self-control and faith.
The Chairperson says the joy of sharing a meal after a long day of fasting is something truly special, whether it is at the mosque, a community center, or simply with loved ones at home.
He says Fiji’s Muslim community is now eagerly awaiting the final announcement, knowing that when the crescent moon is seen, the journey of faith, fasting and generosity will begin once again.
