As thousands of Hindus in Fiji are celebrating Dhanteras today, Fijians are being reminded to pray for the less fortunate and if possible, assist them in any way they can.
Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, National Secretary Krishneel Tiwari says on this day Hindus pray to Lord Kuber, the God of Wealth and Dhanwantri.
He says on this day people also light a diya for the God of Death, Yamraj.
Tiwari says Hindus pray that there is no accidental deaths in the family and also for the long life of family members.
He says the five days of Diwali prayers start with Dhanteras today.
Nausori resident, Roshni Kumar says as this day is for praying for wealth and prosperity, she will be assisting anyone who seeks help at her doorsteps today.
Kumar is encouraging everyone to assist the less fortunate in whatever way possible.
She further says she will make offerings and pray to the Goddess of Wealth today.
Kumar says she will also buy salt, brass pot, gold earrings and a broom today as this is considered auspicious on this day.
Meanwhile, Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali will be celebrated tomorrow.
It commemorates Krishna’s destruction of Narakasur and prayers are also offered for the souls of ancestors.
On the third day or on Diwali and Lakshmi Puja, families seek blessings from Goddess Lakshmi to ensure their prosperity and light diyas, candles, and fireworks; and visit temples.
The fourth day is known as Annakut Govardhan Puja which commemorates Krishna’s defeat of Indra, the king of the Gods.
Merchants perform religious ceremonies and open new account books.
The fifth day called Bhai Duj celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.
On that day sisters pray for the success and well-being of their brothers.
