Fijians are closer to having super fast internet after Digicel Fiji started testing their 5G network today.

Regional Digicel Pacific CEO Shally Jannif says this is a significant step up for Digicel Fiji as it once again leads the way with innovation and becomes the first telecommunications provider in Fiji to officially launch 5G testing.

Jannif says Digicel Fiji officially received a license in Fiji to test 5G technology on 17th April from the Ministry of Communications.

She says 5G testing commences today, and they will work with the Government and their partners on a deployment 5G represents a future where devices are interconnected, and immersive experiences are the norm.

Jannif says 5G technology offers numerous benefits to businesses, including increased capacity, lower latency, and better connectivity.

This translates into improved streaming, enhanced video conferences, and a greater ability to perform tasks remotely.

She adds this marks a new milestone for Digicel Fiji and the people of Fiji.

Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Communications Viliame Gavoka say they are assured that the connectivity in Fiji will be at par with the best in the world.

Gavoka says with this technology advancement, it puts Fiji on the map in global telecom technology standards.

He says with a new technology, some safeguards and measures will need to be put in place.

The testing of their 5G network will last for 12 months.
