Fijian boxer Joy “The Jet” Ali has passed away at the age of 36 at the CWM hospital this morning.
Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro confirmed that Ali who was admitted at the CWM hospital last month passed away at 1.30am.
She said that Ali was first admitted at the Nadi Hospital and was later transferred to the CWM Hospital for further treatment.
Joy Ali’s brother, Farzan Ali said the family is in deep remorse for his passing.
He said Ali was a national boxing hero and will always be remembered for his work.
He added it is pity that his brother Zulfikar Joy Ali who contributed so much to the development and lifting of boxing as a sport in Fiji has passed away.
Farzan said their family will be taking Ali’s body back to Nadi of which he will be accorded a full family burial today.
Meanwhile, the Boxing Commission of Fiji has also expressed its remorse for the passing of Fiji’s Golden Boy Joy Ali.
The Boxing Commission Director, Malakai Veisamasama said that Ali’s passing is a great loss to the local boxing community.
He said that Ali was always an inspiration to the young people in Fiji who wanted take up boxing as a sport.
Joy Ali’s greatest career highlight was when he won the Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) Light Middleweight title, defeating the former World Amateur Bronze Medalist Ercüment Aslan of Turkey.
He was also ranked 15th by the World Boxing Association in the Super Welterweight division.
Joy Ali is survived by his wife and six children.
