The Vodafone Fiji 7s team has won the Las Vegas 7s for the first time after thumping New Zealand 35-19 in the Cup final.
Fiji looked impressive as they led 21-0 at halftime after two tries from Jerry Tuwai and a try from Savenaca Rawaca.
Fiji came back strongly in the second half with two tries to hitman Semi Kunatani.
NZ scored through Jack Goodhue and Ambrose Curtis.
However, Fiji held on strongly to win 35-19.
This is Fiji’s second win against NZ within 24 hours as the Ben Ryan coached side beat NZ 14-12 in the pool stages yesterday morning.
Captain Osea Kolinisau, who has been given three weeks to recover for the Hong Kong 7s, said the players have been working hard on their discipline before the elimination rounds.
Kolinisau said they are still in the race in the Series.
With the huge number of Fijian supporters at Sam Boyd Stadium, Kolinisau said it was great for them to witness Fiji win in Las Vegas for the first time.
South Africa still leads the World Rugby HSBC 7s table with 93 points.
NZ is in second place with 88 points while Fiji is in third position with 86 points.
The next HSBC 7s tournament will be in Hong Kong from the 27th to the 29th of next month.
