Fiji’s tourism sector is expected to contribute $16 trillion to the global economy, creating 449 million jobs worldwide by 2034.

This was highlighted by Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka while officiating at the opening of the 2024 HOTEC launch at Sheraton Resort in Nadi.

Gavoka says the government is committed to supporting local businesses within the tourism sector, ensuring that they thrive and contribute to the overall economy.

He urges the industry stakeholders to embrace innovation and technology, encouraging them to explore new avenues for attracting tourists and improving service delivery.

Fiji Tourism's CEO, Brent Hill says tourism is thriving, contributing 40 percent to our nation’s GDP.

He says as of September 2024, a 7 percent increase in tourism numbers from last year was noted bringing them closer to their goal of welcoming one million visitors by year-end.

He further says last year our gross tourism receipts reached $3.3 billion and they expect to hit $4 billion soon.

Hill says generation Z values travel more than home ownership, showing a strong desire for eco-friendly and authentic travel experiences.

He says as digital payments grow in popularity, they will also explore the role of artificial intelligence in tourism.

Chairperson of the HOTEC organizing committee, Soraya Marama says they are committed to making tourism practices more sustainable, especially as they prepare for the 29th Conference of Parties where tourism will be part of climate action discussions for the first time.

Marama says as HOTEC 2024 continues, participants will enjoy activities like cooking classes, wine training and discussions on sustainable tourism's future.

She says it is essential that everyone work together for the continued growth of Fiji’s tourism industry.

Meanwhile, this year’s HOTEC trade show promises to change the face of Fiji's tourism industry, bringing together local and international businesses to explore new ideas and partnerships that will elevate visitor experiences and promote sustainable growth.
