Fiji will be hosting the Spartan trifecta event in November this year and it is expected to bring in approximately $12 million per annum as direct economic benefit.
This has been highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka in parliament while responding to a question by Assistant Minister for Waterways and Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna on the progress and benefits Fiji will derive from hosting the Spartan event.
Gavoka says the cabinet endorsed the hosting of the Spartan trifecta event in Fiji for a three year partnership whereby the first event will be held from 9th to the 12th of November this year.
He says Spartan is a series of obstacle races of varying distances attracting a wide global audience of fitness minded to the seasoned elite athletes and each event is held at locations that combines terrain and unique features like creeks, mountains as well as man made obstacles.
He says by bringing Spartan to Fiji, they are showcasing the ability to host global events and reach global audience.
Gavoka says this year they are looking up to 3,000 participants from Fiji’s key source markets who will staying in Nadi and the Coral Coast.
While responding to a question by Opposition MP, Faiyaz Koya on the Governments contribution, Gavoka says their contribution to this is going to be $750,000 a year for three years.
In his response to Leader of Opposition, Inia Seriuratu’s question on how many people they are expecting on our shores as room capacity is one of Fiji’s constraints when it comes to hosting major events, Gavoka says the event is going to be in November which is a low month for Fiji and the whole of Nadi and the Coral Coast will be accommodating 3,000 people.
He says there will be people who will be staying in 5-star resorts and in backpackers and they can cater to these people.
