Fiji thumps Malaysia in HK opener

The Digicel Fiji 7s team started their 2011 Hong Kong 7s campaign on a high note last night with a 59-0 win against Malaysia.

The Dale Tonawai led side did not have much trouble against their opponent, who had the services of three local boys in their lineup.

Naval officer Nikola Matawalu showed why he was given the nod ahead of Emosi Vucago when he scored Fiji’s first three tries for a 19-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Fiji scored another 6 tries with Jerry Burotu scoring a double, Miti Nacagilevu also had his name on the scoring sheet before replacement winger David Batiratu crossed the line twice and Emosi Vucago also had his name on the try sheet.

Coach Iliesa Tanivula said the side will need to continue with their impressive performance as they have two tough games today against Russia and Kenya.

Results from last night’s pool games: Australia thumped Zimbabwe 42-0, South Africa defeated Spain 33-5, Samoa beat Mexico 64-0, England beat China 59-5 and New Zealand hammered Korea 61-0.
