Students from Fiji’s 14 provinces at the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development in Tailevu are the first in the Pacific to use the HomeBiogas Bio-Toilet Kit as part of their sustainable living to save water and use renewable energy to provide for their daily meals.
The systems which were donated by the State of Israel through Israel's official international development cooperation program, MASHAV, in partnership with the HomeBiogas official distributor, Pacific Grow, was commissioned at the school in Nadave today.
The Bio-Toilet connects to the HomeBiogas system, which is an off-grid appliance.
The main appliance, the HomeBiogas system, takes waste such as food scraps, animal manure, and humanure using a biological process, and converts into clean cooking energy.
Permanent Secretary of Rural and Maritime Development, David Kolitagane says this Bio-Toilet curriculum will be taught to students at CATD that represent Fiji’s 14 provinces, and they will have the capacity to install and maintain them in their villages.
He says CATD, will not only graduate mainstream plumbers, but plumbers who can practice environmentally sustainable plumbing practices.
He further states as they continue to evolve, it is their duty to develop the appropriate technology that will forge ahead in a sustainable manner.
Meanwhile, the Ambassador of the State of Israel Roi Rosenblit says the State of Israel stands with Fiji and the Pacific Region, with their innovation, science and capacity building to develop the capabilities needed to adapt, prepare, mitigate and build resilience to the climate crisis with the use of cutting edge technology such as this HomeBiogas Toilet Kit installed at the Centre for Appropriate Technology Development.
He further says apart from other affirmations, CATD will also strengthen the cooperation between the State of Israel and the Pacific Island Countries to support efforts in addressing sustainable development challenges, based on the unique experience and innovative skills of Israel in the fields of public health, food security, water management, renewable energy, climate change adaptation and mitigation.
