The Fiji Airways Men’s national 7s team struggled to beat Spain 24-12 in their second pool match in the Hamilton 7s.
The team has now qualified for the cup quarterfinals.
The half time score was 12-5.
Eroni Sau scored Fiji’s first try in the first minute as Fiji led 5-0.
Captain Jerry Tuwai scored Fiji’s second try after racing away from inside their own half as Fiji extended their lead to 12-0.
Mesulame Kunavula and Eroni Sau got yellow cards in the first half as Spain took advantage of two extra players and scored a try just before half time.
Spain’s Manuel Sainz scored their second try in the second half to level the score at 12 all.
Speedster Alosio Naduva scored Fiji’s third try as Fiji regained the lead to 17-12.
Playmaker Amenoni Nasilasila scored Fiji’s last try after some brilliant work by Jasa Veremalua.
Fiji coach Gareth Baber says that after last weeks disappoinment the team is moving in the right direction.
Fiji had earlier beaten Wales 28-0.
Fiji will play their final pool match against Australia at 6.50pm.
The medal quarterfinals will start at 11.36am tomorrow, the semifinal will be at 3.49pm while the final will start at 7.03pm tomorrow.
