While looking at the errors made for all the teams at the 2023 Rugby World Cup the highest were made by Chile with Fiji at number two.
Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Head of Athletic Performance and Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Fiji Water Flying Fijians in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Naca Cawanibuka stated this on fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan saying numbers do not lie.
Cawanibuka says if we can minimise our error rate by 20 percent over an entire tournament, we actually have the chance to progress further.
He says back in 2021, when the 7s team was preparing for the Olympics, they changed that as their errors were way lower.
The Strength and Conditioning Coach says the reason they competed well against Tier 1 teams is because their penalties were way lower, below 10.
Cawanibuka says that was part of their values, discipline, and if they can get their penalties lower then we stand a high chance of winning a game.
He says that comes down to focus, paying attention, habits, how they coach the players and how to execute skills with good habits.
The Head of Athletic Performance says our game profile is high risk rugby with former 7s coach Ben Ryan usually saying Fiji lives and dies by the sword.
He says Fiji’s game is free flow, high tempo, and an offloading game which is fine if they can minimise some of those errors.
Cawanibuka adds once the players can see that and make habitual lifestyle changes and how they prepare as an athlete, you can just imagine what they can achieve.
