Fiji has fallen short on Gender Equality for women in various areas including that of Economic Empowerment as shown in the 2017 Gender Gap Index where Fiji scored 0.4 out of 1 in women’s economic empowerment.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Women, Mereseini Vuniwaqa while officiating the Gender Lens to the UN Guiding Principals on Business and Human Rights currently being held at the Holiday Inn in Suva.
Vuniwaqa says that Gender Gap Index is one of the four measurable indicators used by the World Economic Forum to measure gender equality.
She adds that true economic empowerment cannot be achieved without respecting the key principal of gender equality in business.
Vuniwaqa has also urged participants to take up the Human Rights Agenda and to continue to help build an inclusive business society that sits on a stronger Human Rights platform.
The aim of the one day workshop is to develop guidance to assist both state and Business enterprises with practical recommendation for what it means to protect and respect the rights of women in business context in line with the UN Guiding Principals on Business and Human Rights.
